Reverse engineering and costing firm System Plus Consulting conducted an in-depth analysis of miniLED and its assembly in apple's 12.9-inch iPad Pro display backlight unit.

"With this latest iPad Pro, Apple is really bringing this newer display technology to consumers." Youssef El Gmili, head of The Lab division at System Plus Consulting, commented, "With many different supply chain and technology options yet to be determined, this System Plus Consulting disassembly report provides insight into Apple's options."

The new backlight system consists of 10,384 miniLED, divided into 2,596 local dimming regions. These miniLED are gan-based chips on sapphire substrates using dedicated top and back dielectric reflectors with engineered luminescence modes.

"At System Plus Consulting, we think they are made by Crystal Photovoltaics of Taiwan," Said Taha Ayari. The foundry was set up in Taiwan in 2017. Its capacity is mainly focused on discrete leds with 100 mm wafer size.

Over 10,000 miniLED COB assemblies are believed to have been completed by TSMT in Taiwan.

MiniLED is installed in a flip chip configuration. MiniLED is driven by nine STMICROELECTRONICS drives. These drivers come in wafer - level chip - level packages. System Plus Consulting's latest report also provides a detailed cost analysis of the drives. Youssef El Gmili confirmed: "The main part of the backlight unit cost comes from miniLED at 37%."
