Industrial optical waveguide materials

Six materials appeared in the literature of seven commercial companies:

· Wacker polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)

· Corning-OE4140 developed by Chamie and Dow

· Photoresist acrylates from Exxelis Truemode

· Photoresist epoxy from MicroChem-Nanosu-8-50

· Photographyable acrylic film, Hitachi Chemical

· OpticalinterLinks photoengraving acrylic monomer on Mylar, named GuideLinkTM

Two waveguide materials, PDMS and acrylate, seem to dominate.

One possible manufacturing method is a hot-pressing process based on the first fabrication of a ridge waveguide and then laminating the ridge waveguide on a polymer substrate in a second step. Finally, the optical layer is formed by filling it with a coating layer. To meet the high temperature requirements already mentioned, high Tg materials such as COC or special polycarbonate can be used.

 

An example of a European project is shown in Figures 7 and 8. Among them is the Siemens C-Lab test vehicle, called OptoSys, manufactured by Siemens AG, Infineon Technologies AG, ILFA Feinstleitetechnik Gmbh and Daimler Chrysler.

 

EOCB is a consortium of Andus, Fraunhofer IZM Berlin, ILFA, Mikropack, OECA, Robert Bosch, Siemens and Paderborn University. They are now replaced by commercial companies such as Vario Optics AG in Vilingen, Switzerland, and are lab-tested/certified by Microtec Laboratories [PUSCH-2006]. Microtec tests and reports on EOCB performance as well as failure mechanism and failure prediction. This provides new information for the standard and qualification pre-review action.

 

The European Union has launched a new optical interconnection programme. PhoxTroT (Optical devices for High performance, low cost and low power data centers, High performance computing systems, terabit/SEC optical interconnect technology) is a two-year, eur 10 million project designed to extend the performance of optical interconnect and infrastructure.
