Integrated optical waveguide in printed circuits -- Electrons and photons

Why care about photonics? Because that was the technology of the USS Enterprise in 1966 star Trek! But beyond science fiction, photons have an inherent advantage over electrons. First, it does not generate or be affected by magnetic fields, which has huge advantages in terms of noise reduction. The second advantage is density, small and compact. Third, individual channels (waveguides) and connectors can be packaged more closely together without noise or crosstalk. IBM's optical roadmap (see Figure 3) lists these advantages. In 2006, the IBM supercomputer used a single fiber optic cable around the edge of the card, multiple fibers around the edge of the card, and multiple fibers throughout the board to connect to various connectors at the processor (Figure 3D, MicroPODs). Integrated optical waveguides were reportedly deployed on cards and backplanes equipped with optical connectors and sockets in 2015. It is predicted that by 2020 there will be optical interconnections on chips, between core and memory, and between boards and backplanes.

For the foreseeable future, the system will be a mixture of high-speed optical and slower electronic data bus circuits, as shown in Figure 4. The actual circuitry elements may be optical computing, memory, encryption, analytics and data distribution, fulfilling the predictions of science fiction writers.
